Designed by Larry Shinoda under the styling direction of Bill Mitchell, the second generation Corvette was a hit.
Approximately 22,000 of the C2 Corvettes were produced each year of the five years from 1963-1967, making the second-generation Corvette among the most desired of all Corvettes built in its 50+ year history. With out a doubt the most talked about and novel idea of the Corvette was the reverse rotational flip up headlights, which would remain a Corvette feature until the 2005 models.
The overall design of the C2 was completely new; the rear end design introduced on the C1 in 1961 was carried over, making the Sting Ray, the Corvette's first major change. Though the 1963 model featured a unique split rear window, and fake hood vents, with a new chassis that featured all-independent suspension and a shorter wheelbase (98 inches versus 102 inches), plus the first-ever Corvette coupe body style and independent rear suspension, the 1963 was a 360 hp (268 kW) powerhouse; and hit 375 hp (280 kW) in 1964.
